Plastic Surgery Without Borders: What to Consider

When making a decision to get plastic surgery, it shouldn’t be a decision taken lightly. We’ve discussed before the dangers of getting plastic surgery operations done in foreign countries but we wanted to discuss the issue a little more in-depth so you can make the most informed decision when it comes to your body.

While it can sometimes be dangerous to get surgery done in other countries, if you decide it’s the best option for you, we urge you to research the background and training of the surgeon and their facility.

Before committing to anything, as we suggest above, research your surgeon. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery provides some really great safety guidelines. Some things mentioned that you should consider when getting plastic surgery abroad are:

  • Do you fully understand the procedure and possible complications?
  • What is your surgeon’s training?
  • Verify that your surgeon is trained and experienced. Make sure they specialize in the procedure.
  • Is the surgeon a member of recognized national and international plastic surgery societies?
  • Does the surgeon and his staff speak your language fluently? If there is a language barrier, that can lead to major miscommunication and possible complications.
  • Check the surgeon’s references and ask as many questions as you need to.

“The World Health Organization developed a 19-question surgical safety checklist that, when implemented, can reduce surgical complications and surgical deaths. This simple checklist, much like a pilot’s pre-flight checklist, can be used in a variety of surgical settings without additional costs”(ISPAS.org).

The most popular countries in 2015 outside of the US to get plastic surgery include: Canada, the U.K, Israel, Singapore, and Costa Rica.

Even when following the safety check-list and following the guidelines above, there are several other important factors to keep in mind.

In the US, you can potentially sue your doctor for malpractice if something goes wrong with your surgery, but this may not be the same in every country. Also, the privacy laws we have established here in the US may also vary from country to country. There are no US laws that protect US patients who go to unlicensed doctors in foreign countries.

One of the main reasons people choose to travel for plastic surgery is the cost. It can be cheaper in other countries, but it is important to remember that sometimes you get what you pay for. Not all procedures are done the same, not all surgeons are the same. That’s not to say there aren’t satisfied patients, we just urge to you to really consider why you’re traveling for the procedure.

Plastic surgery shouldn’t have borders, but we do encourage you to thoroughly weigh your options before traveling abroad for procedures you can have performed here in the US.

If you’re thinking of having plastic surgery and have questions you can schedule a free consultation with our own Dr. McFate here in Austin, TX. We offer many great resources for those patients traveling from outside of the Austin area.

Bikini Season: Lift, Enhancement or Implant Exchange?

Bikini season is approaching quickly! Temperatures are getting warmer and the beaches are awaiting the arrival of beach-goers. Be the talk of the beach with a breast enhancement from Precision Plastic Surgery! Whether you’re interested in an increased size, an implant exchange, or a breast lift, Dr. McFate can have you ready for summer’s bikini season!

Breast Enhancements

One of the most common cosmetic procedures in the United States today is breast augmentation. Precision has an on-site surgery suite that is accredited through the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facility (AAAASF) and we can perform the surgery right here in our Austin, TX office!

Dr. McFate can increase the size of your breasts, restore fullness, and correct asymmetries. Our plastic surgeon can determine the best size and shape for your body type during one of our free consultations. He will discuss all of your options to help create a better idea of what will work best and what fits your expectations for breast augmentation.

Breast Implant Exchange

Patients should realize that breast implants are not a permanent solution. Many women can plan on maintaining their implants for over 30 years, but this is not always the case. Aging, breast shape and volume changes, or a newly desired body image are additional reasons that a person may elect to remove or exchange their implants.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is an excellent procedure to correct breast ptosis (sagging of the breast and nipple). Breast ptosis can result from aging, weight loss, and pregnancy. Dr. McFate is fully trained in the latest techniques of breast contouring to produce optimal results for his Austin area breast lift patients.

Dr. John McFate and the staff at Precision Plastic Surgery in Austin welcome any questions you may have about breast augmentation. Our plastic surgeon will help you determine which procedure is best for you and your body. You can contact us at our Precision Plastic Surgery office at (512) 270-8047, or you may request a free consultation with Dr. McFate online.

Be proud to show off your awesome beach body!

Three Reasons Breast Augmentation may be Right for You

True beauty comes from inside, but the importance of a first impression can't be denied. Women, especially, are judged on appearance and taught from an early age that shapely breasts are a critical part of femininity.
Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery in the United States, and can generally be performed as an outpatient procedure. Nearly 300,000 augmentations were completed just last year, and recovery is typically brief and very palatable.
If it's something you've considered for yourself, here are three reasons it might be the right choice.
Correcting Abnormalities
Some women's breasts are noticeably different in size from left to right, which can cause body anxiety and self-esteem issues. If you suffer from disproportionate or misshapen breasts, augmentation can offer you a more uniform appearance.
Creating Fuller Breasts
Perhaps you simply crave larger curves. Silicone and saline implants are available in varying sizes to enhance your breasts and create a fuller chest, and the skilled team at Precision Plastic Surgery will work with you to determine the best choice for your body.
Embracing a More Youthful Appearance
As we age, skin begins to lose elasticity and sag. Fluctuations in weight or breastfeeding can cause additional strain on the chest. Tissue can be lifted and adjusted to firm breasts and return them to their original position, giving you a lusher, more youthful look.

You're in highly skilled hands with Dr. McFate and his professional surgical team. Contact us to schedule a consultation and find out how we can help you realize the body you've always desired.

Different Breast Implant Sizes for Different Desires

Youth is Never Wasted

When you’re 23, you may have some very specific reasons for undergoing a breast augmentation, and some of them might include an additional amount of boldness or boundless youthful energy. Some younger women seeking breast augmentation decide to go much bigger—often substantially larger than an average enhanced breast. There’s a youthful aesthetic that many young women are trying to achieve, which almost seems to say, “I have implants and I’m proud of them.” This is the perfect look for a particular mindset around a specific age if it can help an individual reach their goals.

With Age Comes Wisdom

But breast augmentation is popular among a broad spectrum of ages. And what we find is that the 40-year-old woman who comes in wanting a breast augmentation does not have the same goals as the 23-year-old woman. Often, the older woman comes into the office looking for natural-looking implants. Often, this will be coupled with a breast lift. In other words, the 40 year old comes in looking for the best natural breasts they could have had when they were 23.

The Times, They Are a-Changing

Certainly, some of this can be chalked up to the changes that take place in our lives over our 20’s, 30’s, and even 40’s and 50’s. “Life is a journey and we are all at different points on that journey. What is indeed important today, may not have the same significance ten years from now,” said Dr. John McFate, owner and surgeon at Precision Plastic Surgery. It’s not surprising that, at different points in our lives, we want different things. But one thing that won’t change is your implant—it will be the same size for the duration of its lifespan. So how do you reconcile the implants you received in your 20’s to now meet your aesthetic goals and their effect on your life in your 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s?

A New Look for a New Age

It turns out the solution is relatively simple, given you’re a candidate and willing to have additional surgery. The procedure is called breast implant revision surgery, and it involves exchanging one set of implants for another, ideally which better suit your new desires and lifestyle. Sometimes, this means taking out a larger set of implants and replacing them with a smaller size or type. Sometimes it’s the opposite. Our Austin breast revision patients have come to expect that once they leave Precision Plastic Surgery, they’ll be thrilled with their new look.

There are some additional challenges that exist with an implant exchange. After an augmentation, scar tissue or capsule forms around the implant. Around 10% of the time, the capsule can develop different levels of firmness. The capsule, which defines the implant pocket, most likely would need to also be addressed at the time of implant exchange. Similarly, if a woman decreases the size of her implants, the skin envelope may need to be addressed. An implant, especially a large size (>400mL), will stretch out and thin the overlying skin and soft tissue. When the size of the implant is reduced, the excess skin may need revision to optimize the aesthetic result. Think of how the right size foot looks in an appropriate fitting sock to visualize this dilemma.

“There are additional challenges to breast revision surgery,” said Dr. McFate. “The breast changes over time from the implants, aging, weight changes, and pregnancy. It’s not always as simple to just exchange one set of implants for another. The overlying skin envelope and prior capsule formation require attention in order to deliver the most aesthetically pleasing breast as possible.”

Less Common Issues

More uncommonly, this procedure must be performed when an implant ruptures. With a saline rupture, you’ll notice right away. Silicone implants, on the other hand, are designed to make ruptures virtually unnoticeable, so you should replace them if you notice symptoms or discomfort, request a size change, or have other concerns.
Less Stress

The operation at times can provide slightly less stress on the body than the original breast augmentation procedure for a couple of reasons. The breast has in a sense become better vascularized from the prior surgery which means healing can be easier. Your previous scars may be utilized at the time of your revision surgery, but there may be additional incisions required depending on the need for a concomitant mastopexy (breast lift) to address the skin envelope..

Make Yourself Happy

Whatever your age, and whatever your desired results, the point of breast augmentation is to make you happy, to improve your quality of life. And based on many surveys of patients who have undergone the procedure, it largely works—it provides new freedoms in life that may not have been obtainable before. But as your definition of what that means changes over the years, you always have the option to go back and revisit your results. Remember, Where ever you are in life, we can help you look your best.
